Shameless US Remake
The formula of getting me to watch a new TV show is super simple, solid pilot and good looking actresses. While aimlessly browsing the web a few weeks back I came across the Pilot of this new show or rather another US remake of a popular UK show “Shameless”. Starring William H Macy, Emmy Rossum, Joan Cusack and Justin Chatwin, this US version stays true to the original series which focuses on an extremely dysfunctional family of Frank Gallagher, a single father of six children. While he spends his days drunk, his kids learn to take care of themselves.
Right off the bat you get the sense of how fucked up this family is, seeing the kids having to pitch in for the electric bill, drinking, smoking freely. But amid all the fuckery there’s something to love about this show, it’s hilarious, charming and has its heartwarming moments. Seeing Fiona (Emmy Rossum) and Debbie (Emma Kenney) interact with their absent drunk dead beat father (William H Macy) as he passed out on the kitchen floor was touching and raw. Or “Lip” (Jeremy Allen White) getting his brother Ian (Cameron Monaghan) a blowjob just to make sure if he is indeed “gay”.
What sealed the deal for me on this show was the fact that there’s something strangely sexy about a makeup less baggy eyed Emmy Rossum. I guess what I am trying to say is regular Emmy Rossum is good, but busted looking Emmy Rossum is great.
What Shameless does great is balancing the extreme fuckery with the subtle lighthearted moments while not overly going too overboard by exaggerating the experiences of this dysfunctional family. It’s a good show, and it’s just been picked up for a full season, so if you’re in the market for something new this show is definitely something to consider.
